Bismi Llāhi l-Raḥmāni l-Raḥīmi.
Muslim communities worldwide have celebrated the life of the Prophet ﷺ in myriad poetic forms and narratives, transmitted from manuscript page to prayer gathering, from private wird to congregational recitation, and even into weddings. One such mawlid that has taken deep root in living devotional practice is سِمْطُ الدُّرَر (Simṭ al-Durar). Associated with al-Ḥabīb ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Ḥusayn al-Ḥabshī, it remains a cherished mawlid in Ḥaḍramī and Indonesian circles.
The title Simṭ al-Durar—a string or necklace of pearls—is not merely decorative language; it sheds light on the work’s inner form. Pearls are gathered, threaded, and set in order; so too does this mawlid gather praise, lineage, longing, birth, beauty, and remembrance into a composition shaped by sequence and return. The fuller title preserved in public textual witnesses—Simṭ al-Durar fī Akhbār Mawlid Khayr al-Bashar wa-mā lahu min Akhlāq wa-Awṣāf wa-Siyar—makes plain that this is at once a praise text, a birth narrative, and a devotional sīrah.
One reason it has endured, in my view, is that it lives in several registers at once. There is the authored matn itself, and there is the received recital form, which many communities know by sound before they know it on the page: the opening ṣalawāt, the مأخذ, the Qurʾanic passages, the flowing prose, the repeated congregational responses, and the standing section of maḥall al-qiyām. Public recital copies make this layered life unmistakable.
The prose opening after the basmala already explains much of its staying power:
It is an opening of great amplitude. It does not hurry towards the narrative. It begins where a true mawlid should begin: with praise of Allah, and only then with the unfolding of the story of the Beloved ﷺ. That movement matters. Simṭ al-Durar is not simply a retelling of sacred biography; it is sīrah warmed by love, adab, and liturgical sound.
What continues to give the text life is its balance. It is learned without becoming dry, lyrical without losing structure, and intimate without becoming careless. It moves through themes the mawlid tradition knows well—the Muḥammadan light, noble lineage, blessed birth, beauty of character, and the sweetness of communal praise—yet it keeps returning the listener to something simple and lasting: gratitude, longing, remembrance, and ṣalawāt.
That is why Simṭ al-Durar still belongs as much to breath as to ink. It is preserved not only in printed editions and digital scans but also in gatherings where repeated recitation allows its cadences to settle in the heart. What follows, then, is more than an introduction to a famous mawlid text: it is an attempt to listen more carefully to one of the best-loved devotional compositions in the Ḥaḍramī–Nusantara inheritance.
Below is a widely performed recital form, heard not only in mawlid majālis (gatherings) but also at weddings within Yemeni diaspora communities in Southeast Asia. To follow the complete mawlid, play the video while reading the text below. I have also provided links to the corresponding points in the video alongside the relevant sections.

Indeed, We have granted you a manifest victory, so that Allah may forgive you what preceded of your fault and what followed, complete His favour upon you, guide you to a straight path, and support you with mighty support. (Qurʾan 48:1–3)

A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering weighs upon him; he is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is gentle and merciful. If they turn away, say: Allah is sufficient for me. There is no deity but Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne. (Qurʾan 9:128–129)

Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with complete peace. (Qurʾan 33:56)

Wa-ṭarrazat burda l-ʿawālimi bi-ṭirāzi l-takrīmi.
And it embroidered the mantle of the worlds with the embroidery of honour.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Tajallā l-Ḥaqqu fī ʿālami qudsihi l-wāsiʿ,
tajalliyan qaḍā bi-intishāri faḍlihi fī l-qarībi wa-l-shāsiʿ.
The Real disclosed Himself in the vast realm of His sanctity—a disclosure that decreed the spread of His grace to the near and the far.
Fa-lahu l-ḥamdu lladhī lā tanḥaṣiru afrāduhu bi-taʿdādin,
Wa lā yumallu takrāruhu bikathrati tardād
To Him belongs all praise — praise so boundless it cannot be contained by any count.
Its repetition never grows wearisome, however often it is repeated.
Ḥaythu abraza min ʿālami l-imkāni
ṣūrata hādhā l-insāni,
For He brought forth from the realm of possibility the form of this human being,
li-yatasharrafa bi-wujūdihi l-thaqalāni,
so that humankind and jinn might be ennobled through his presence,
wa-tantashira asrāruhu fī l-akwāni.
And so that the mysteries he carried within him might radiate outward across every world and every age
Fa-mā min sirrin ittaṣala bihi qalbu munībin
No secret to which a penitent heart becomes connected
illā min sawābighi faḍli Llāhi ʿalā hādhā l-ḥabībi.
is anything but a part of Allah’s abundant grace upon this Beloved.
Yā la-qalbin surūruhu qad tawālā / bi-ḥabībin ʿamma l-anāma nawālā.
What joy has come, one wave after another, to a heart through a Beloved whose bounty has encompassed all humankind.
Jalla man sharrafa l-wujūda bi-nūrin / ghamara l-kawna bahjatan wa-jamālā.
Exalted is the One who honoured existence with a light that flooded the entire universe with radiance and beauty.
Qad taraqqā fī l-ḥusni aʿlā maqāmin / wa-tanāhā fī majdihi wa-taʿālā.
He rose to the highest station in beauty, and reached the very furthest reaches of glory and sublimity.
Lāḥaẓat-hu l-ʿuyūnu fīmā jtalat-hu / basharan kāmilan yuzīḥu l-ḍalālā.
Eyes that beheld him saw, in what they witnessed, a complete and perfect human being — one whose very presence dispels all error and misguidance.
Wa-huwa min fawqi ʿilmi mā qad raʾat-hu / rifʿatan fī shuʾūnihi wa-kamālā.
And yet he stands far beyond whatever knowledge any eye has ever grasped of him — his true elevation and perfection remain beyond all reach.
Fa-subḥāna lladhī abraza min ḥaḍrati l-imtināni
Glory be to the One who brought forth, from the very presence of His boundless generosity,
mā yaʿjizu ʿan waṣfihi l-lisānu,
that which no tongue is capable of describing.
wa-yaḥāru fī taʿaqquli maʿānīhi l-janānu.
And before whose meanings the mind itself stands lost and bewildered.
Intashara minhu fī ʿālami l-buṭūni wa-l-ẓuhūri
mā malaʾa l-wujūda l-khalqiyya nūran.
There spread from him throughout the worlds of inwardness and outward manifestation that which filled created existence with light.
Fa-tabāraka Llāhu min ilāhin karīmin.
Blessed is Allah—what a generous God He is.
Bashsharatnā āyātuhu fī l-dhikri l-ḥakīmi.
His verses in the Wise Reminder have brought us glad tidings.
Bibshāratin — laqad jāʾakum rasūlun min anfusikum
With this glad tiding — there has come to you a Messenger from among your own selves
ʿAzīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bi-l-muʾminīna raʾūfun raḥīm.
Your suffering weighs heavily upon him; he is deeply concerned for you, and is gracious and merciful to the believers.
Fa-man jāʾat-hu hādhihi l-bishāratu wa-talaqqāhā bi-qalbin salīmin,
Whoever this glad tiding reaches and receives it with a sound and open heart—
fa-qad hudiya ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin.
has indeed been guided to a straight path.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Wa-ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, shahādatan yuʿribu bihā l-lisānu ʿammā taḍammanahu l-janānu mina l-taṣdīqi bihā wa-l-idhʿāni.
And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner — a testimony through which the tongue gives outward expression to what the heart already holds within it of belief and willing surrender.
Tathbutu bihā fī l-ṣudūri mina l-īmāni qawāʿiduhu, wa-talūḥu ʿalā ahli l-yaqīni min sirri dhālika l-idhʿāni wa-l-taṣdīqi shawāhiduhu.
Through it, the foundations of faith are established in hearts, while the signs of the secret of that submission and affirmation become manifest to the people of certainty.
Wa-ashhadu anna sayyidanā Muḥammadan al-ʿabdu l-ṣādiqu fī qawlihi wa-fiʿlihi, wa-l-muballighu ʿani Llāhi mā amarahu bi-tablīghihi li-khalqihi min farḍihi wa-naflihi.
And I bear witness that our master Muḥammad is the truthful servant in word and deed, and the one who conveyed from Allah what He commanded him to deliver to His creation, both the obligatory and the supererogatory.
ʿAbdun arsalahu Llāhu li-l-ʿālamīna bashīran wa-nadhīran, fa-ballagha l-risālata wa-addā l-amānata, wa-hadā Llāhu bihi mina l-ummati basharan kathīran, fa-kāna fī ẓulmati l-jahli li-l-mustabṣirīna sirājan wa-qamaran munīran.
A servant whom Allah sent to all the worlds as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. He conveyed the Message and discharged the trust. Through him Allah guided many people of the community; amid the darkness of ignorance, he was a lamp and a luminous moon for those seeking insight.
Fa-mā aʿẓamahā min minnatin takarrama Llāhu bihā ʿalā l-bashari, wa-mā awsaʿahā min niʿmatin intashara sirruhā fī l-baḥri wa-l-barri.
How immense a gift it was, that Allah in His generosity bestowed upon all of humanity — and how vast a blessing, whose secret has spread across both sea and land.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim bi-ajalli l-ṣalawāti wa-ajmaʿihā, wa-azkā l-taḥiyyāti wa-awsaʿihā, ʿalā hādhā l-ʿabdi lladhī wafā bi-ḥaqqi l-ʿubūdiyyati wa-baraza fīhā fī khilʿati l-kamāli, wa-qāma bi-ḥaqqi l-rubūbiyyati fī mawāṭini l-khidmati li-Llāhi wa-aqbala ʿalayhi ghāyata l-iqbāli.
O Allah, send the most majestic and comprehensive of blessings, and the purest and most expansive of salutations, upon this servant who fulfilled the right of servitude completely — appearing within it clothed in the garment of perfection — and who stood firm in honoring the right of the Lord in every station of service to Allah, turning toward Him with the fullest and most absolute of turning.
Ṣalātan yattaṣilu bihā rūḥu l-muṣallī ʿalayhi bihi, fa-yanbasiṭu fī qalbihi nūru sirri taʿalluqihi bihi wa-ḥubbihi, wa-yuktabu bihā bi-ʿināyati Llāhi fī ḥizbihi, wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi lladhīna irtaqaw ṣahwata l-majdi bi-qurbihi, wa-tafayyaʾū ẓilāla l-sharafi l-aṣliyyi bi-wuddihi wa-ḥubbihi.
A blessing through which the soul of the one who invokes blessings upon him becomes connected to him, so that the light of the secret of attachment to and love for him spreads within that person’s heart. Through it, by Allah’s care, that person is recorded among his company. And may blessings be upon his family and companions, who ascended the summit of glory through nearness to him and rested in the shade of innate nobility through affection and love for him,
Mā ʿaṭṭara l-akwāna bi-nashri dhikrāhum nasīmun.
for as long as a breeze perfumes the universe by spreading the fragrance of their remembrance.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.

Wa-ḥaqqiqnā bi-ṣidqi l-lajā wa-l-ibtihāli; wa-sāmiḥnā wa-anʿim ʿalaynā bi-l-wiṣāli.
Grant us the reality of sincere refuge and supplication; pardon us and favour us with communion.
A-lā yā Allāh, yā Rabb, yā ʿĀlim bi-ḥālī; ʿasā baʿda l-ẓamā bā-yaqaʿ lī shurba ḥālī.
O Allah, O Lord, O Knower of my state—perhaps after thirst a sweet drink will come to me.
Wa-qarrib kulla buʿdin wa-jaddid kulla bālī; wa-ḥaqqiq kulla qaṣdin lanā yā khayra wālin.
Draw near every distance and renew every condition of mine, and fulfil every aim of ours, O best of Protectors.
A-lā yā Allāh, yā Rabb, yā ʿĀlim bi-ḥālī; ʿasā baʿda l-ẓamā bā-yaqaʿ lī shurba ḥālī.
O Allah, O Lord, O Knower of my state—perhaps after thirst a sweet drink will come to me.
ʿAlā bābika waqafnā bi-waṣfi l-imtithāli; wa-min rajwāka narjū l-ʿaṭā yā dhā l-nawāli.
At Your door we have stood in the posture of obedience, and from our hope in You we seek the gift, O Possessor of bounty.
A-lā yā Allāh, yā Rabb, yā ʿĀlim bi-ḥālī; ʿasā baʿda l-ẓamā bā-yaqaʿ lī shurba ḥālī.
O Allah, O Lord, O Knower of my state—perhaps after thirst a sweet drink will come to me.
Fa-yā Rabbi stajib daʿwatī wa-ḥmil thiqālī; ʿalā ẓahrī mina l-wizri amthāla l-jibāli.
O my Lord, answer my prayer and carry my burdens — upon my back, sins like mountains.
A-lā yā Allāh, yā Rabb, yā ʿĀlim bi-ḥālī; ʿasā baʿda l-ẓamā bā-yaqaʿ lī shurba ḥālī.
O Allah, O Lord, O Knower of my state—perhaps after thirst a sweet drink will come to me.
ʿAsā bi-l-Muṣṭafā l-Mujtabā ʿayni l-rijāli; yaṣīru l-wizru ḥasanātin wa-l-mardhūlu ghālī.
Perhaps through the Chosen, the Elect, the very eye of men, sins will become good deeds and the rejected one will become precious.
A-lā yā Allāh, yā Rabb, yā ʿĀlim bi-ḥālī; ʿasā baʿda l-ẓamā bā-yaqaʿ lī shurba ḥālī.
O Allah, O Lord, O Knower of my state—perhaps after thirst a sweet drink will come to me.
A note on the language: this qaṣīdah keeps a consistent ḥālī end-rhyme—the lām–yāʾ pattern—and draws on the classical language of munājāh, intimate address to God. Several lines retain a Ḥaḍramī devotional register, including colloquial forms such as bā-yaqaʿ (‘it will happen or come to pass’) and hānā (‘here’). The phrase ʿulūm al-salāṭīn al-rijāl refers not to worldly kingship but to the inward knowledge of the great spiritual masters—the ‘sovereigns among humankind.’ The closing couplet expresses the hope of tabdīl al-sayyiʾāt ḥasanāt, the transformation of sins into good deeds, as in Qurʾan 25:70.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Ammā baʿd:
To proceed:
Fa-lammā taʿallaqat irādatu Llāhi fī l-ʿilmi l-qadīm
bi-ẓuhūri asrāri l-takhṣīṣi li-l-bashari l-karīm
bi-l-taqdīmi wa-l-takrīm.
When the Will of God — within the Ancient, Pre-eternal Knowledge — attached itself
to the manifestation of the mysteries of distinction for the Noble Human Being,
through precedence and honour,
Nafadhati l-qudratu l-bāhiratu
bi-l-niʿmati l-wāsiʿati wa-l-minnati l-ghāmira.
the Dazzling Power took effect,
accompanied by the Vast Blessing and the Overflowing Grace.
Fa-infalaqat bayḍatu l-taṣwīri
fī l-ʿālami l-muṭlaqi l-kabīr.
And so the Egg of Formation split open
within the Great, Absolute Realm —
ʿAn jamālin mashhūdin bi-l-ʿayni
ḥāwin li-waṣfi l-kamāli l-muṭlaqi wa-l-ḥusni l-tāmmi wa-l-zayn.
revealing a beauty witnessed by the very eye,
one that encompassed the description of absolute perfection, complete beauty, and adornment.
Fa-tanaqqala dhālika l-jamālu l-maymūn
fī l-aṣlābi l-karīmati wa-l-buṭūn.
That blessed beauty then passed
through the noble loins and wombs.
Fa-mā min ṣulbin ḍammahu
illā wa-tammat ʿalayhi mina Llāhi l-niʿma.
Not a single loin harboured him
but that God's blessing was made complete upon it.
Fa-huwa l-qamaru l-tāmmu lladhī yatanaqqalu fī burūjihi
li-yatasharrafa bihi mawṭinu istiqrārihi wa-mawḍiʿu khurūjihi.
For he is the Full Moon that traverses its celestial stations,
so that the place of his rest and the site of his emergence might be ennobled through him.
Wa-qad qaḍati l-aqdāru l-azaliyyatu bi-mā qaḍat
wa-aẓharat min sirri hādhā l-nūri mā aẓharat
wa-khaṣṣaṣat bihi man khaṣṣaṣat.
The Pre-eternal Decrees ordained what they ordained,
and brought to light from the secret of this Light what they brought to light,
and singled out through him whomever they singled out.
Fa-kāna mustaqarruhu fī l-aṣlābi l-fākhira
wa-l-arḥāmi l-sharīfati l-ṭāhira.
His resting place was in the illustrious loins
and the noble, pure wombs —
Ḥattā baraza fī ʿālami l-shahādati basharan lā ka-l-bashar
wa-nūran ḥayyara l-afkāra ẓuhūruhu wa-bahara.
until he came forth into the world of visible creation: a human being unlike any other,
and a light whose appearance bewildered and dazzled all thought.
Fa-taʿallaqat himmatu l-rāqimi li-hādhihi l-ḥurūf
bi-an yarquma fī hādhā l-qirṭāsi mā huwa ladayhi min ʿajāʾibi dhālika l-nūri maʿrūfun
wa-in kānati l-alsunu lā tafī bi-ʿushri miʿshāri awṣāfi dhālika l-mawṣūf.
And so the aspiration of the one who inscribes these letters
attached itself to inscribe upon this parchment what is known to him of the wonders of that Light —
even though tongues cannot convey a tenth of a tenth of the descriptions of the One described.
Tashwīqan li-l-sāmiʿīn
min khawāṣṣi l-muʾminīn
wa-tarwīḥan li-l-mutaʿalliqīna bi-hādhā l-nūri l-mubīn.
This is done as a stirring of longing in the listeners
from among the elect of the believers,
and as a refreshment for those whose hearts are attached to this Manifest Light.
Wa-illā fa-annā tuʿribu l-aqlām
ʿan shuʾūni khayri l-anām.
For otherwise, how could pens ever give expression
to the affairs of the Best of All Creation?
Wa-lākin hazzanī ilā tadwīni mā ḥafiẓtuhu min siyari ashrafi l-makhlūqīn
wa-mā akramahu Llāhu bihi fī mawlidihi mina l-faḍli lladhī ʿamma l-ʿālamīna
wa-baqiyat rāyatuhu fī l-kawni manshūratan ʿalā marri l-ayyāmi wa-l-shuhūri wa-l-sinīn.
Yet what stirred me toward setting down what I have preserved of the life-accounts of the Noblest of Creation —
and of what God honoured him with at his birth, from the bounty that encompassed all the worlds,
whose banner has remained unfurled throughout the universe across the passage of days, months, and years—
Dāʿī l-taʿalluqi bi-hādhihi l-ḥaḍrati l-karīma
wa-lāʿiju l-tashawwuqi ilā samāʿi awṣāfihā l-ʿaẓīma.
was the call of attachment to this Noble Presence,
and the burning ache of longing to hear the tremendous qualities of this Noble Presence.
Perhaps Allah will benefit both reciter and listener through it, so that both may be included in the intercession of this Prophet, the Intercessor,
Wa-yatarawwaḥāni bi-rawḥi dhālika l-naʿīm.
and find refreshment in the breeze of that bliss.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Wa-qad āna li-l-qalami an yakhuṭṭa mā ḥarrakathu fīhi l-anāmil
mimmā istafādahu l-fahmu min ṣifāti hādhā l-ʿabdi l-maḥbūbi l-kāmili
wa-shamāʾilihi llatī hiya aḥsanu l-shamāʾil.
The time has come for the pen to set down what the fingertips have stirred within it —
from what the understanding has gathered of the qualities of this beloved, Perfect Servant,
and of his noble traits, which are the finest of all traits.
Wa-hunā ḥasuna an nuthbita mā balagha ilaynā fī shaʾni hādhā l-ḥabībi min akhbārin wa-āthār
li-yatasharrafa bi-kitābatihi l-qalamu wa-l-qirṭās, wa-tatanazzaha fī ḥadāʾiqihi l-asmāʿu wa-l-abṣār.
It is fitting here that we record what has reached us concerning this Beloved, of reports and traditions,
so that pen and parchment may be honoured by their inscription, and so that the ears and eyes may take their pleasure strolling through his gardens.
Wa-qad balaghanā fī l-aḥādīthi l-mashhūra
anna awwala shayʾin khalaqahu Llāhu huwa l-nūru l-mūdaʿu fī hādhihi l-ṣūra.
It has reached us through the well-known reports,
that the first thing God created was the Light deposited within this form.
Fa-nūru hādhā l-ḥabībi awwalu makhlūqin baraza fī l-ʿālam
wa-minhu tafarraʿa l-wujūdu khalqan baʿda khalqin fī-mā ḥadatha wa-mā taqādam.
The light of this beloved was the first created thing to emerge in the universe,
and from it existence branched forth, creation after creation, among what is recent and what is ancient.
Wa-qad akhraja ʿAbdu l-Razzāqi bi-sanadihi ʿan Jābiri bni ʿAbdi Llāhi l-Anṣāriyyi raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhumā qāl: qultu: yā Rasūla Llāh, bi-abī wa-ummī, akhbirnī ʿan awwali shayʾin khalaqahu Llāhu qabla l-ashyāʾ
ʿAbd al-Razzāq has transmitted through his chain from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, may God be pleased with them both, who said: "I said, 'O Messenger of God — may my father and mother be your ransom — tell me of the first thing God created before all things.'
qāl: «Yā Jābir, inna Llāha khalaqa qabla l-ashyāʾi nūra nabiyyika Muḥammadin — ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam — min nūrih.»
He said: 'O Jābir, God created before all things the light of your Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ from His own Light.'"
Wa-qad warada min ḥadīthi Abī Hurayrata raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhu annahu qāl
qāla Rasūlu Llāhi ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam: «Kuntu awwala l-nabiyyīna fī l-khalq, wa-ākhirahum fī l-baʿth.»
And it has come to us from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayra, may God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I was the first of the prophets in creation, and the last of them in being sent."
Wa-qad taʿaddadati l-riwāyātu bi-annahu awwalu l-khalqi wujūdan wa-ashrafuhum mawlūdā.
The narrations have multiplied confirming that he was the first of creation in existence
and the noblest of them in birth.
Wa-lammā kānati l-saʿādatu l-abadiyya
lahā mulāḥaẓatun khafiyyatun
ikhtaṣṣat man shāʾat min al-bariyya
bi-kamāli l-khuṣūṣiyya.
And since Eternal Felicity possesses a hidden regard —
singling out from among creation whomever it wills
with the fullness of special election
Fa-stawdaʿat hādhā l-nūra l-mubīn
aṣlāba wa-buṭūna man sharrafathu min al-ʿālamīn.
it entrusted this Manifest Light to the loins and wombs of those it had honoured from among all the worlds.
Fa-tanaqqala hādhā l-nūru min ṣulbi Ādama wa-Nūḥin wa-Ibrāhīm
ḥattā awṣalathu yadu l-ʿilmi l-qadīm
ilā man khaṣṣaṣathu bi-l-takrīmi abīhi l-karīm
ʿAbdi Llāhi bni ʿAbdi l-Muṭṭalibi dhī l-qadri l-ʿaẓīm.
This Light passed from the loins of Adam, then Noah, then Abraham, until the Hand of Pre-eternal Knowledge delivered it to the one it had singled out for honour—his noble father, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the one of tremendous rank,
Wa-ummihi llatī hiya fī l-makhāwifi āmina
al-sayyidati l-karīmati Āmina.
and his mother—she who was safe amid dangers (āmina)—
the Noble Lady, Āmina.
Fa-talaqqāhu ṣulbu ʿAbdi Llāhi fa-alqāhu ilā baṭnihā
fa-ḍammathu aḥshāʾuhā bi-maʿūnati Llāhi muḥāfiẓatan ʿalā ḥaqqi hādhihi l-durrati wa-ṣawnihā.
The loins of ʿAbd Allāh received it and passed it into her womb,
and her inner being clasped it with Allah’s aid, preserving the due honour and protection of this Pearl.
Fa-ḥamalathu bi-riʿāyati Llāh — kamā warada ʿanhā — ḥamlan khafīfan lā tajidu lahu thiqalan
wa-lā tashkū minhu alaman wa-lā ʿilalā.
She carried him under Allah’s care, as has been related of her—an easy pregnancy whose weight she did not feel, and from which she suffered neither pain nor illness.
Ḥattā marra l-shahru baʿda l-shahri min ḥamlihi
wa-qaruba waqtu burūzihi ilā ʿālami l-shahāda;
li-tanbasiṭa ʿalā ahli hādhā l-ʿālami fuyūḍātu faḍlihi,
Month after month of the pregnancy passed,
until the time of his emergence into the world of visible creation drew near —
so that the overflowing graces of his bounty might spread upon the people of this world,
Wa-tantashira fīhi āthāru majdihi l-ṣamīm.
and the traces of his deep-rooted glory might be made manifest throughout it.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Wa-mundhu ʿaliqat bihi hādhihi l-durratu l-maknūnatu wa-l-jawharatu l-maṣūnatu.
From the moment this hidden pearl—this safeguarded jewel—conceived him,
Wa-l-kawnu kulluhu yuṣbiḥu wa-yumsī fī surūrin wa-ibtihājin bi-qurbi ẓuhūri ishrāqi hādhā l-sirāji.
the whole cosmos passed its mornings and evenings in joy and gladness as the radiance of this Lamp drew near.
Wa-l-ʿuyūnu mutashawwifatun ilā burūzihi, mutashawwiqatun ilā iltiqāṭi jawāhiri kunūzihi.
All eyes strained towards his emergence, yearning to gather the gems of his treasures.
Wa-kullu dābbatin li-Qurayshin naṭaqat bi-faṣīḥi l-ʿibārati, muʿlinatan bi-kamāli l-bishārati.
Every beast belonging to Quraysh spoke in clear, eloquent speech, proclaiming the fullness of the glad tidings.
Wa-mā min ḥāmilin ḥamalat fī dhālika l-ʿāmi illā atat fī ḥamlihā bi-ghulāmin min barakāti wa-saʿādati hādhā l-imāmi.
No woman became pregnant that year without bearing a boy, through the blessings and felicity of this Imam.
Wa-lam tazali l-arḍu wa-l-samāwātu mutaḍammikhatan bi-ʿiṭri l-faraḥi bi-mulāqāti ashrafi l-bariyyāti, wa-burūzihi min ʿālami l-khafāʾi ilā ʿālami l-ẓuhūri, baʿda tanaqqulihi fī l-buṭūni wa-l-ẓuhūri.
The earth and heavens remained perfumed with joy at meeting the noblest of created beings and at his emergence from the world of concealment into the world of manifestation, after his passage through wombs and loins.
Fa-aẓhara Llāhu fī l-wujūdi bahjata l-takrīmi, wa-basaṭa fī l-ʿālami l-kabīri māʾidata l-tashrīfi wa-l-taʿẓīmi, bi-burūzi hādhā l-bashari l-karīmi.
Through the emergence of this noble human being, Allah manifested the splendour of honour in existence and spread throughout the great world the banquet of ennoblement and glorification.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Fa-ḥīna qaruba awānu waḍʿi hādhā l-ḥabībi, aʿlanati l-samāwātu wa-l-araḍūna wa-man fīhinna bi-l-tarḥībi.
When the time for the birth of this Beloved drew near, the heavens, the earths, and all who dwell in them proclaimed their welcome.
Wa-amṭāru l-jūdi l-ilāhiyyi ʿalā ahli l-wujūdi tathijju, wa-alsinatu l-malāʾikati bi-l-tabshīri li-l-ʿālamīna taʿijju.
The rains of divine generosity poured abundantly upon the people of existence, while the tongues of the angels resounded with glad tidings for all the worlds.
Subḥāna Llāhi wa-l-ḥamdu li-Llāhi wa-lā ilāha illā Llāhu wa-Llāhu akbar. (×3)
Glory be to Allah; all praise belongs to Allah; there is no deity but Allah; and Allah is the Greatest. (×3)
Wa-l-qudratu kashafat qināʿa hādhā l-mastūri, li-yabruza nūruhu kāmilan fī ʿālami l-ẓuhūri, nūran fāqa kulla nūrin.
Divine Power lifted the veil from this hidden one, so that his light might emerge fully in the world of manifestation—a light surpassing every other light.
Wa-anfadha l-Ḥaqqu ḥukmahu ʿalā man atamma Llāhu ʿalayhi l-niʿmata min khawāṣṣi l-ummati: an yaḥḍura ʿinda waḍʿihi ummahu.
The Real carried out His decree concerning those elect members of the community upon whom Allah had completed His favour: that they should attend his mother at the time of his birth.
Taʾnīsan li-janābihā l-masʿūdi, wa-mushārakatan lahā fī hādhā l-simāṭi l-mamdūdi.
to bring comfort to her blessed presence and to share with her in this outspread banquet.
Fa-ḥaḍarat bi-tawfīqi Llāhi l-sayyidatu Maryamu wa-l-sayyidatu Āsiyatu, wa-maʿahumā mina l-ḥūri l-ʿīni man qasama Llāhu lahu mina l-sharafi bi-l-qismati l-wāfiyati.
Then, by Allah’s enabling grace, the Lady Maryam and the Lady Āsiya attended, accompanied by those wide-eyed maidens of Paradise to whom Allah had apportioned a full share of honour.
Fa-atā l-waqtu lladhī rattaba Llāhu ʿalā ḥuḍūrihi wujūda hādhā l-mawlūdi, fa-infalaqa ṣubḥu l-kamāli mina l-nūri ʿan ʿamūdin, wa-baraza l-ḥāmidu l-maḥmūdu mudhʿinan li-Llāhi bi-l-taʿẓīmi wa-l-sujūdi.
Then came the moment upon whose arrival Allah had ordained the existence of this newborn. The dawn of perfection broke, revealing a pillar of light, and the Praiser, the Praised One, came forth—submissive to Allah in glorification and prostration.
Ṣallā Llāhu ʿalā Muḥammadin; ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam. (×2)
May Allah send blessings upon Muḥammad ﷺ; may Allah bless him and grant him peace. (×2)

Fa-ṭrabū yā ahla l-mathānī, fa-hazāru l-yumni gharrad; wa-staḍīʾū bi-jamālin, yā Rasūla Llāhi, fāqa fī l-ḥusni tafarrad.
Rejoice, O people of the oft-repeated praises; the nightingale of felicity has sung. Be illumined by a beauty—O Messenger of Allah—that surpassed all beauty in peerless uniqueness.

Wa-lanā l-bushrā bi-saʿdin mustamirrin laysa yanfad; ḥaythu ūtīnā ʿaṭāʾan, yā Rasūla Llāhi, jamaʿa l-fakhra l-muʾabbad.
Glad tidings are ours of a felicity continuous and never exhausted, for we were granted a gift—O Messenger of Allah—that gathered everlasting glory.

To my Lord belongs every praise—too exalted to be encompassed by counting—for He favoured us with the presence of the Chosen Guide, Muḥammad ﷺ.

Wa-ṣalātu Llāhi taghshā ashrafa l-rusli Muḥammad.
May Allah’s blessings envelop the noblest of the messengers, Muḥammad ﷺ.
Rabbi fa-ghfir lī dhunūbī bi-barakati l-Hādī Muḥammad.
Lord, forgive my sins through the blessing of the Guide, Muḥammad ﷺ.
Wa-salāmun mustamirrun kulla ḥīnin yatajaddad.
And an abiding peace, renewed at every moment.

Rabbi fa-ghfir lī dhunūbī bi-barakati l-Hādī Muḥammad.
Lord, forgive my sins through the blessing of the Guide, Muḥammad ﷺ.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
Wa-ḥīna baraza ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama min baṭni ummihi, baraza rāfiʿan ṭarfahu ilā l-samāʾi, mūmiʾan bi-dhālika l-rafʿi ilā anna lahu sharafan; ʿalā majduhu wa-samā.
When he ﷺ emerged from his mother’s womb, he came forth with his gaze raised towards the sky, indicating by that upward gesture a nobility whose glory had risen high and soared.
Wa-kāna waqtu mawlidi sayyidi l-kawnayni, mina l-shuhūri shahra Rabīʿi l-Awwali, wa-mina l-ayyāmi yawma l-ithnayni; wa-mawḍiʿu wilādatihi wa-qabrihi bi-l-Ḥaramayni.
The Master of the Two Worlds was born in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, on a Monday. His birthplace and his grave are in the Two Sanctuaries.
Wa-qad warada annahu ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama wulida makhtūnan makḥūlan maqṭūʿa l-surrati; tawallat dhālika li-sharafihi ʿinda Llāhi aydī l-qudrati.
It has been related that he ﷺ was born circumcised, with eyes lined as if with kohl and his umbilical cord already severed—the hands of Divine Power having attended to this in honour of his rank before Allah.
Wa-maʿa burūzihi ilā hādhā l-ʿālami ẓahara mina l-ʿajāʾibi mā yadullu ʿalā annahu ashrafu l-makhlūqīna wa-afḍalu l-ḥabāʾibi.
With his coming forth into this world appeared wonders testifying that he is the noblest of created beings and the most excellent of the beloved.
Fa-qad warada ʿan ʿAbdi l-Raḥmāni bni ʿAwfin ʿan ummihi l-Shifāʾi raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhumā, qālat: lammā waladat Āminatu raḍiya Llāhu ʿanhā Rasūla Llāhi ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama, waqaʿa ʿalā yadayya, fa-stahalla, fa-samiʿtu qāʾilan yaqūlu: raḥimaka Llāhu, aw: raḥimaka Rabbuka. Qālat: fa-lam yazali l-ḥadīthu minnī ʿalā bālin ḥattā ibtaʿathahu Llāhu, fa-kuntu min awwali l-nāsi islāman.
It is related from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, from his mother al-Shifāʾ, that when Āmina gave birth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he fell into her hands and uttered his first cry. She heard a voice pray for mercy upon him, and everything between east and west was illuminated for him until she saw some of the palaces of Byzantium. She then experienced darkness and awe first from her right and then from her left, hearing that he had been taken to the west and to the east. The account remained in her mind until Allah raised him as a Prophet, and she was among the first people to embrace Islam.
Wa-kam tarjamat al-sunnatu min ʿaẓīmi l-muʿjizāti wa-bāhiri l-āyāti l-bayyināti, bi-mā yaqḍī bi-ʿaẓīmi sharafihi ʿinda mawlāhu, wa-anna ʿayna ʿināyatihi fī kulli ḥīnin tarʿāhu, wa-annahu l-Hādī ilā l-ṣirāṭi l-mustaqīmi.
How abundantly the Prophetic tradition has conveyed tremendous miracles and radiant, manifest signs—attesting to the greatness of his honour before his Lord, to the eye of divine care watching over him at every moment, and to his being the Guide to the Straight Path.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.

Wa laqad ittaṣafa ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam min maḥāsini al-akhlāq,
bi-mā taḍīqu ʿan kitābatihi buṭūnu al-awrāq.
He ﷺ was adorned with such beauties of character that the pages would be too narrow to contain their description.
Kāna ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam aḥsana al-nāsi khuluqan wa khalqan,
wa awwalahum ilā makārimi al-akhlāqi sabqan, wa awsaʿahum bi-l-muʾminīna ḥilman wa rifqan.
He was, may God's peace and blessings be upon him, the finest of people in both his inner character and his outward form,
the foremost of them in hastening toward noble virtues, and the most expansive of them in forbearance and gentleness toward the believers.
Barran raʾūfan, lā yaqūlu wa lā yafʿalu illā maʿrūfan.
He was righteous and tender-hearted, never speaking or acting except with what was good and honourable.
Lahu al-khuluqu al-sahl, wa al-lafẓu al-muḥtawī ʿalā al-maʿnā al-jazl.
His was a character of ease, and speech that carried weighty meaning.
Idhā daʿāhu al-miskīnu ajābahu ijābatan muʿajjala.
Wa-huwa l-abu l-shafīqu l-raḥīmu bi-l-yatīmi wa-l-armalati.
When a person in need called upon him, he answered without delay.
He was the compassionate, merciful father to the orphan and the widow.
Wa lahu maʿa suhūlati akhlāqihi al-haybatu al-qawiyyatu
allatī tartaʿidu minhā farāʾiṣu al-aqwiyāʾi min al-bariyya.
And alongside the gentleness of his character, he possessed a commanding awe
before which the limbs of the mightiest among creation would tremble.
Wa min nashri ṭībihi taʿaṭṭarat al-ṭuruqu wa al-manāzil,
wa bi-ʿarfi dhikrihi taṭayyabat al-majālisu wa al-maḥāfil.
From the spreading of his fragrance, the roads and dwellings were perfumed,
and by the sweet scent of his remembrance, the gatherings and assemblies were made fragrant.
Fa-huwa ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam jāmiʿu al-ṣifāti al-kamāliyya, wa al-munfaridu fī khalqihi wa khuluqihi bi-ashrafi khuṣūṣiyya.
He ﷺ gathered within himself all qualities of perfection and was singular in his outward form and inward character through the noblest distinction.
Fa-mā min khuluqin fī l-bariyyati maḥmūdin illā wa-huwa mutalaqqan ʿan Zayni l-Wujūdi.
There is no praiseworthy trait among creation except that it has been received from the Adornment of Existence.
Ajmaltu fī waṣfi al-Ḥabībi wa shaʾnih, wa lahu al-ʿulā fī majdihi wa makānih.
Awṣāfu ʿizzin qad taʿālā majduhā, akhadhat ʿalā najmi al-Suhā bi-ʿinānih.
I have spoken in summary of the Beloved and his station, and his is the loftiness in his glory and his rank.
These are descriptions of honour whose majesty has risen high—they have seized even the faintest star by its reins.
Wa qad inbasaṭa al-qalamu fī tadwīni mā afādahu al-ʿilmu min waqāʾiʿi mawlidi al-Nabiyyi al-Karīm,
wa ḥikāyati mā akrama Allāhu bihi hādhā al-ʿAbda al-Muqarraba min al-takrīmi wa al-taʿẓīmi wa al-khuluqi al-ʿaẓīm.
The pen has spread itself in setting down what knowledge has conveyed of the events of the birth of the Noble Prophet, and the account of what God bestowed upon this favoured servant of honour, veneration, and magnificent character.
Fa-ḥasuna minnī an umsika aʿinnata al-aqlāmi fī hādhā al-maqām,
wa aqraʾa al-salāma ʿalā Sayyidi al-Anām.
It is fitting, then, that I rein in the pens at this point,
and offer greetings of peace upon the Master of All Creation.
Al-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā l-Nabiyyu wa-raḥmatu Llāhi wa-barakātuhu. (×3)
Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of God and His blessings. (three times)
Wa bi-dhālika yaḥsunu al-khatmu kamā yaḥsunu al-taqdīm.
Fa-ʿalayhi afḍalu al-ṣalāti wa al-taslīm.
And with that, the closing is made beautiful, just as the opening was made beautiful.
Upon him be the finest of blessings and peace.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.

Bismi Llāhi l-Raḥmāni l-Raḥīmi. Al-ḥamdu li-Llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīna. Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin, wa-ʿalā āli sayyidinā Muḥammadin.
In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master Muḥammad, and bless the family of our master Muḥammad.
Wa-lammā naẓama l-fikru min darārī l-awṣāfi l-Muḥammadiyyati ʿuqūdan, tawajjahtu ilā Llāhi mutawassilan bi-sayyidī wa-ḥabībī Muḥammadin ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama an yajʿala saʿyī fīhi mashkūran wa-fiʿlī fīhi maḥmūdan, wa-an yaktuba ʿamalī fī l-aʿmāli l-maqbūlati, wa-tawajjuhī fī l-tawajjuhāti l-khāliṣati wa-l-ṣalawāti l-mawṣūlati.
Now that thought has strung necklaces from the lustrous pearls of the Muḥammadan qualities, I turn to Allah, taking my master and beloved Muḥammad ﷺ as a means of approach. I ask Him to make my effort gratefully accepted and my deed praiseworthy, to inscribe my labour among accepted works, and my turning among sincere devotions and unbroken prayers.

O Allah, to whom all hopes turn and return triumphant, and at whose gate of glory travellers set down their loads and are enveloped by overflowing grace: we turn to You through the noblest means before You—the Master of the Messengers, Your truthful and trustworthy servant, our master Muḥammad, whose message encompassed all worlds. Send blessings and peace upon that Perfect Being: repository of Your trust, guardian of Your secret, bearer of the banner of Your all-embracing call, the great father, Your beloved, distinguished with splendid honour at every station of nearness and manifestation, distributor of Your aid among Your servants, pourer of the cups of Your guidance for those who love You, Master of the Two Worlds, the noblest of humankind and jinn, the beloved, sincere servant whom You singled out with the greatest distinctions.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-aṣḥābihi wa-ahli ḥaḍrati iqtirābihi min aḥbābihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him, his family and companions, and those among his beloved who are drawn near to his presence.

O Allah, we present before You the rank of this Noble Prophet and seek approach to You through the honour of his exalted station. Watch over our movements and stillness with Your care; preserve us through all our states and changes with Your beautiful protection and secure safeguarding; bring us to the utmost of our hopes in nearness to You and to this Beloved; accept from us whatever intentions and deeds we have undertaken; place us among those present in his presence and those who follow his paths; and make us fulfil what is due to You and to him and faithfully keep Your covenant.

O Allah, we yearn for Your special mercy, so do not deny us. Our good opinion of You is our means of approach, so do not disappoint us. We believe in You, Your Messenger, and the religion he brought. Through him we turn to You seeking intercession: meet the sinner among us with forgiveness, the wrongdoer with kindness, the petitioner with what was asked, and the hopeful with what was hoped for. Make us among those who supported this Beloved, stood by him, befriended him, and aided him. Through his blessing and noble spiritual direction, encompass our children, our parents, the people of our land and valley, and all Muslim and believing men and women everywhere. Keep the banner of the upright religion unfurled in every land and the signs of Islam and faith flourishing among their people, inwardly and outwardly.
Wa-kshifi Llāhumma kurbata l-makrūbīna, wa-qḍi dayna l-madīnīna, wa-ghfir li-l-mudhnibīna, wa-taqabbal tawbata l-tāʾibīna, wa-nshur raḥmataka ʿalā ʿibādika l-muʾminīna ajmaʿīna, wa-kfuf sharra l-muʿtadīna wa-l-ẓālimīna, wa-bsuṭi l-ʿadla bi-wulāti l-ḥaqqi fī jamīʿi l-nawāḥī wa-l-aqṭāri, wa-ayyidhum bi-taʾyīdin min ʿindika wa-naṣrin ʿalā l-muʿānidīna mina l-munāfiqīna wa-l-kuffāri.
O Allah, relieve the distressed, settle the debts of the indebted, forgive sinners, accept the repentance of the penitent, and spread Your mercy over all Your believing servants. Restrain the harm of aggressors and wrongdoers. Extend justice through righteous authorities in every region and land, and support them with reinforcement from You and victory over the obstinate among the hypocrites and disbelievers.
Wa-jʿalnā yā Rabbi fī l-ḥiṣni l-ḥaṣīni min jamīʿi l-balāyā, wa-fī l-ḥirzi l-makīni mina l-dhunūbi wa-l-khaṭāyā, wa-adimnā fī l-ʿamali bi-ṭāʿatika wa-l-ṣidqi fī khidmatika qāʾimīna, wa-idhā tawaffaytanā fa-tawaffanā muslimīna muʾminīna.
Place us, O Lord, within an impregnable fortress against every affliction and a secure refuge from sins and transgressions. Keep us steadfast in obedience to You and truthful service to You; and when You take our souls, take us as Muslims and believers.
Wa-khtim lanā minka bi-khayrin ajmaʿīna.
Grant all of us a good ending from You.
Wa-ṣalli wa-sallim ʿalā hādhā l-ḥabībi l-maḥbūbi li-l-ajsāmi wa-l-arwāḥi wa-l-qulūbi, wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi wa-man ilayhi mansūbun.
Send blessings and peace upon this Beloved, loved by bodies, spirits, and hearts, and upon his family, companions, and all who belong to him.
Wa-ākhiru daʿwānā ani l-ḥamdu li-Llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīna.
And the conclusion of our prayer is: all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Bi-faḍlihi—Subḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizzati ʿammā yaṣifūna; wa-salāmun ʿalā l-mursalīna; wa-l-ḥamdu li-Llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīna.
By His grace: Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, far above what they ascribe; peace be upon the messengers; and all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Al-Fātiḥah.
(At this point the gathering recites Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.)
Thumma innahu ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama baʿda an ḥakamati l-qudratu bi-ẓuhūrihi, wa-ntasharat fī l-akwāni lawāmiʿu nūrihi.
Then, after Divine Power had decreed his appearance and the gleaming rays of his light had spread throughout all the worlds—
Tasābaqat ilā raḍāʿihi l-murḍiʿātu, wa-tawaffarat raghabātu ahli l-wujūdi fī ḥaḍānati hādhihi l-dhāti. Fa-nafadha l-ḥukmu mina l-ḥaḍrati l-ʿaẓīmati, bi-wāsiṭati l-sawābiqi l-qadīmati, bi-anna l-awlā bi-tarbiyati hādhā l-ḥabībi wa-ḥaḍānatihi l-sayyidatu Ḥalīmatu.
The wet nurses vied with one another to nurse him, and the people of existence longed to care for this blessed being. Then the decree issued from the Exalted Presence, by virtue of what had been preordained from eternity, that the lady Ḥalīma was most worthy to rear and nurture this Beloved.
Wa-ḥīna lāḥaẓat-hu ʿuyūnuhā, wa-baraza fī shaʾnihā min asrāri l-qudrati l-rabbāniyyati maknūnuhā, nāzala qalbahā mina l-faraḥi wa-l-surūri mā dalla ʿalā anna ḥaẓẓahā mina l-karāmati ʿinda Llāhi ḥaẓẓun mawfūrun.
When her eyes beheld him and the hidden secrets of Divine Power became manifest in her affairs, such joy and gladness came upon her heart that it revealed the abundant share of honour reserved for her with Allah.
Fa-ḥannat ʿalayhi ḥunuwwa l-ummahāti ʿalā l-banīna, wa-raghibat fī raḍāʿihi ṭamaʿan fī nayli barakātihi llatī shamilati l-ʿālamīna.
She showed him the tenderness mothers show their sons, and longed to nurse him in the hope of receiving his blessings, which encompassed all the worlds.
Fa-ṭalabat min ummihi l-karīmati an tatawallā raḍāʿahu wa-ḥaḍānatahu wa-tarbiyatahu bi-l-ʿayni l-raḥīmati.
She asked his noble mother to entrust her with nursing, caring for, and rearing him with a compassionate eye.
Fa-ajābat-hā bi-l-talbiyati li-dāʿīhā, li-mā raʾat min ṣidqihā fī ḥusni l-tarbiyati wa-wufūri dawāʿīhā.
His mother willingly answered her request, having seen her sincerity, her good care, and the strength of her motives.
Fa-taraḥḥalat bihi ilā manāzilihā masrūratan, wa-hiya bi-riʿāyati Llāhi maḥfūfatun wa-bi-ʿayni ʿināyatihi manẓūratun.
She set out joyfully with him towards her home, encompassed by Allah’s protection and watched over by His care.
Fa-shāhadat fī ṭarīqihā min gharībi l-muʿjizāti mā dalla-hā ʿalā annahu ashrafu l-makhlūqāti.
Along the way she witnessed extraordinary miracles that showed her he was the noblest of all created beings.
Fa-qad atat wa-shārifuhā wa-atānuhā ḍaʿīfatāni, wa-rajaʿat wa-humā li-dawābbi l-qāfilati yasbiqāni. Wa-qad darrati l-shārifu wa-l-shiyāhu mina l-albāni bi-mā ḥayyara l-ʿuqūla wa-l-adhhāna.
She had arrived with her old she-camel and donkey both feeble; on the return journey they outpaced the caravan’s animals. The she-camel and sheep yielded so much milk that minds were left astonished.
Wa-baqiya ʿindahā fī ḥaḍānatihā wa-zawjihā sanatayn, tatalaqqā min barakātihi wa-ʿajāʾibi muʿjizātihi mā taqarru bihi l-ʿaynu, wa-tantashiru asrāruhu fī l-kawnayni.
He remained in her and her husband’s care for two years. During that time she received blessings and witnessed miracles that delighted the eye, while his mysteries spread through both worlds.
Ḥattā wājahat-hu malāʾikatu l-takhṣīṣi wa-l-ikrāmi, bi-l-sharafi lladhī ʿammat barakatuhu l-anāma, wa-huwa yarʿā l-aghnāma.
Then, while he was tending the sheep, the angels of special election and honour encountered him with the distinction whose blessing embraced all creation.
Fa-aḍjaʿūhu ʿalā l-arḍi iḍjāʿa tashrīfin, wa-shaqqū baṭnahu shaqqan laṭīfan.
They laid him upon the ground as an act of honour and opened his abdomen with a gentle incision.
Thumma akhrajū min qalbihi mā akhrajūhu, wa-awdaʿū fīhi min asrāri l-ʿilmi wa-l-ḥikmati mā awdaʿūhu.
They then removed from his heart what they removed and placed within it such mysteries of knowledge and wisdom as they placed.
Wa-mā akhraja l-amlāku min qalbihi adhan, wa-lākinnahum zādūhu ṭuhran ʿalā ṭuhrin.
What the angels removed from his heart was not any harm; rather, they increased him in purity upon purity.
Wa-huwa maʿa dhālika fī quwwatin wa-thabātin, yataṣaffaḥu min suṭūri l-qudrati l-ilāhiyyati bāhira l-āyāti.
Throughout all this he remained strong and steadfast, beholding the dazzling signs inscribed by Divine Power.
Fa-balagha ilā murḍiʿatihi l-ṣāliḥati l-ʿafīfati mā ḥaṣala ʿalā dhātihi l-sharīfati.
News of what had happened to his noble person reached his righteous and virtuous wet nurse.
Fa-takhawwafat ʿalayhi min ḥādithin takhshāhu, wa-lam tadri annahu mulāḥaẓun bi-l-mulāḥaẓati l-tāmmati min mawlāhu.
She feared that some calamity might befall him, not knowing that his Lord watched over him with complete care.
Fa-raddat-hu ilā ummihi wa-hiya ghayru sakhiyyatin bi-firāqihi, wa-lākin li-mā qāma maʿahā min ḥuzni l-qalbi ʿalayhi wa-ishfāqihi.
She therefore returned him to his mother, though she was deeply unwilling to part from him, because of the sorrow and anxious concern for him that had arisen within her heart.
Wa-huwa bi-ḥamdi Llāhi fī ḥiṣnin māniʿin wa-maqāmin karīmin.
And he—praise be to Allah—was within an impregnable fortress and a noble station.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim ashrafa l-ṣalāti wa-l-taslīmi ʿalā sayyidinā wa-nabiyyinā Muḥammadin al-Raʾūfi l-Raḥīmi.
O Allah, send the noblest blessings and peace upon our master and Prophet Muḥammad, the gentle and merciful.
Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalayhi wa-ʿalā ālihi.
O Allah, send blessings and peace upon him ﷺ, and bless him and his family.
